Church Leadership

It’s his church, and he’s our senior pastor. Underneath the guidance of Jesus is the pastor called to oversee the church

with the help of deacons who are qualified Christians who follow Jesus and encourage others to follow him as well.

At Kingdom Harvest, our formal eldership structure involves the pastor and deacons.

Philippians 1:1

To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops (pastors) and deacons.

The definition of an elder is simply a leader in the church (1 Timothy 5:17). In Titus 1, Paul refers to pastors (bishop, overseer) as elders. Elders include the specific offices of pastors and deacons.

Jesus calls qualified men to lead his church as pastors. Qualifications for pastors are found in 1 Timothy 3 and include

leading their wives and children well, a record of serving Jesus well both in the church and in everyday life, a thorough knowledge of the Bible and a mature Christian walk, and a good reputation both in and out of the church.

The primary duties of a pastor include praying and studying Scripture, leading the vision of the church, caring for the people of the church, teaching, living lives that are exemplary, protecting the people of the church from false doctrine and teachers, and developing other leaders.

Pastor Qualifications

From 1 Timothy 3:1-7, we see the qualifications of a pastor are:

  1. To be blameless

  2. The husband of one wife

  3. Temperate

  4. Sober-minded

  5. Of good behavior

  6. Hospitable

  7. Able to teach

  8. Not given to wine

  9. Not violent

  10. Not greedy for money

  11. Gentle

  12. Not quarrelsome

  13. Not covetous

  14. One who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?)

  15. Not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.

  16. Must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Jesus calls qualified men to help lead his church as deacons. It must be said that the root word for deacon is "servant". What we need to understand is the purpose of the word. For the word "servant", we can find out if it is more than the root word by the application. Otherwise, we can simply trust that the intended meaning is the root word.

Here, the word deacon is first mentioned in Acts 6 and it simply is used as the root word "servant". The actual office of deacon is first mentioned in Philippians 1:1. Paul instructed Timothy and Titus on church eldership, including pastors and deacons for every church.

Deacon Qualifications

From 1 timothy 3:8-12, we see the qualifications for a deacon are:

  1. To be reverent

  2. Not double-tongued

  3. Not given to much wine

  4. Not greedy for money

  5. Holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience

  6. Be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless

  7. Let deacons be the husbands of one wife

  8. Ruling their children and their own houses well.

We all have a part to do in the body of Christ. In fact, the members, not just the pastor, were a major part of church ministry. As we read the book of Acts, we see that spiritual gifts were very much a part of the ministry of the New Testament church. 1 Corinthians 12 says that everyone has spiritual gifts, given as the Holy Spirit wills, and that we are all greatly needed to keep the church healthy and functioning in the right direction.

We see that lay people exercised spiritual gifts in the early church and it should be the same today. Thus, every believer should earnestly desire spiritual gifts and can expect God to work through him or her according to those gifts. The church needs to rely on its members for ministry and also to carry out much of the work required to help accomplish our mission to have as many people meet Jesus as possible.

Let's work together
We are looking for ministries with the same passion to reach the unreached, plant new churches, and equip new leaders for the Kingdom Harvest.
